I imagine a lot or atleast some of you have headlamps as part of your gear, however, there are so many out there that I am having a hard time deciding.

Obviously your 3 watt LED is going to be brighter, however, will burn through power quicker. Some have red filters or red or green LEDs in order to allow you to keep your night vision. Some other options are lamps will have multiple LEDs, one that is a spot or flood and then others for reading up close. Finally, some run off of AAA, AA, or CR123 batteries. My understanding is that the cR123 batteries perform better is cold temperatures.

For those of you who use them, what are you using?

Here are a few that I am considering:

Princeton Tec Apex in black.

I have a few of those petzl's for camping and for work. I really like it. Variable light output and a infrared setting. I used it when we were camping up in Munds Park and it lit up the camp site that night of the new moon.

unfortunately, you can't where a ball cap & the light. I have a couple of the ones that clip on the bill of the cap. Work good

That's right, I remember...did not know it was the Petzl that you had. That seems to be a nice light and is the least expensive of the ones I posted.

True, well I suppose you could turn your cap backwards, that should work I would think?

That is what I was thinking, AA or AAA batteries are probably a lot more readily available than a CR123. Kind of like Remington 870 or Ruger 10/22 parts...I think every gas station in upstate New York has parts for them ;)

I forget who makes mine, but it was given to me by an Army buddy after he got back from Iraq and had an extra. It uses AAA.

I used mine with a hat on. It is not the best angle but I turn it around or put it above my bill depending on the activity.

I've tried a lot of different lamps. Just about every brand, I think. I wear pretty much all of them with my ball cap, boonie hat, or beanie hat. The important features to me are:

AA or AAA batteries
Adjustable angle lamp
Adjustable output modes (red is a plus)
Easy to adjust band
Cost

I don't spend a lot on headlamps because I beat them up pretty hard. Best ones I've used (and still use) are the Streamlight Enduro and Argo HP models and the Energizer multi-output lamps from Wal-Mart.

I also forgot to put the Petzl Tak-Tikka. Just picked one up, very impressed by it so far.

I second the recommendation for the Tak-Tikka. I have used one extensively and it has held up very well. The thing I like most is that is it very compact yet very bright. I have also used some of the Princeton Tec headlamps and have been pleased.
